Spirits were high on February 10 as Berkeley High School’s girls varsity basketball team decisively closed out its season in a game against Oakland High School, winning 64-22 on their senior night.

Spirits were high on February 10 as Berkeley High School’s (BHS) girls varsity basketball team decisively closed out its season in a game against Oakland High School, winning 64-22 on their senior night. According to head coach Daniel Spikes, “There [were] a lot of people trying to be heroes, and we lost a lot of close games. But tonight, they were unselfish, they passed the ball around, and they really cheered each other on.”

BHS’s yellowjacket mascot waved at the crowd in the opening of the boys varsity basketball team’s senior night match against the Castro Valley Trojans on February 11. BHS won 70-45. The crowd roared as senior Elijah Williams set up fellow senior Jude Rockafellow for a triumphant dunk. Carter Staton, another senior, said, “I’ve been playing with these guys since middle school. … These guys [are] my brothers right here.”

On February 11, the Jacket Stadium was filled with handmade signs and raucous cheers as the BHS girls varsity soccer team took on Piedmont High School in their final match of the season. Talia McCloy, a senior and co-captain, said, “The energy of everyone in the stands and on the field [was exciting].” Although there were two injuries of senior players during the game, BHS finished with a triumphant 4-0 win.

On February 9, the BHS boys varsity soccer team stepped onto the field for their senior night game against Mt. Eden High School. Their first goal was scored by Ko Wiedlin, a senior who has been on the varsity team since his junior year. Wiedlin said, “Playing as a team, seeing all the fans … and having everyone’s parents out here, it was just a very magical night overall.” The match ended in a landslide victory of 4-0.
